So far I am Not aware of any groups dedicated to raising this fish in australia, especially not any dealing with possible shows and such. anyone know or possibly interested in starting something?

I've been searching and have not found any. I am still learning the basics of genetics and breeding guppy's so would not be of much help to anyone re- starting, but I'd be first to jump in and join such a group no worries.

If we can get enough people together It might be worth starting something, or at least dedicate some more time to this place to keep people informed of the breeds available, care and other info. Now just to get together some proper guppy breeders who have something other than small scale breeding programmes, and some people dedicated to producing 'show quality' fish in australia.

Society? Are this site's Admins thinking of taking this board to a higher level or am I missing the point here?

Not exactly, but If there was enough interest we could most definitly have a section dedicated to being the 'Aus Guppy society'
What do others think of the idea? the rest of the board would still be a dedicated guppy board for anyone who needs general info though.

I honestly think the first step in making this board successful is changing to vB and establishing a .com.au

I think It is actually being considered. Just getting registration and hosting is the problem so-far as well as the cost. May get something like that up and running soon though.

I was actually looking into the costing involved for a .com.au board to try and establish a aus Guppy site. I have found a local private server owner willing to help with hoasting, now just need to register a domain name . Fortunatley, almost every combination of aus/Guppies and Forum seems to be free ;D

There were large guppy shows held in Brisbane years ago at the EKKA along side the general fish show. I don't think there are any guppies specific clubs here but there are groups of keen guppy keepers in the general aquarium clubs around south east QLD.

good to hear. There are quite a few keen guppy keepers here in Tas as well, I think the problem so far is getting them all together as so far they just seem to be members of 'general' fishkeeping clubs rather than a specific club. These days I am noticing a lot more intrest in certain species of fish though.

feel free to ask anything on this site regarding setup and anything you are needing help with. as for a few pointers I would first research this site and the web regarding 'cycling' your tank as this is usually the first big pitfall of new fish owners in general. probably the other general care tips are
25% water changes every week, using a chlorine/chloramine remover
small feedings once daily when you are starting a tank and for the first 8 weeks or so of setting up
only add fish 2-3 at a time. only keep a few fish in the tank for the first 6-8 weeks.
after this setting up time you should have more guppies than you possibly know what to do with.

I would definitely be interested in joining a guppy society, although being a beginner/hobbyist (with delusions of future grandeur) I'm not sure I'd be that helpful. With regards to building a .com.au site and the costs involved, if you have enough interested parties perhaps you could get us all to donate a small yearly membership fee (eg, $10 or something) which could be sent to a paypal account or something, and then used towards registering the domain name and all the rest. I had a thought the other day when I found this site, doing up flyers and distributing them to the lps to give out to people when they buy guppies...eg "want more info on raising your guppies? visit cyberguppy.proboards57.com..." but of course that would only get more beginners signing up, not the proper breeders.

I wouldnt be able to pay a membership fee i know that $10 isn't much but some people just cant't afford it but you could look at having small guppy shows or somthing to raise funds. Also I know that the LPS in my area would be greatful to have somewhere to direct new owners to. and in order to become a "proper" breeder you have to get info and help from somewhere.

Good point, that can be a lot of money (I should know, I'm saving up for my wedding so can barely afford anything, would dearly love to get another couple of fish tanks). Still, maybe there could be different levels of membership then, like free membership - forums only, and paid membership...although I don't really have any idea what a paid membership could offer that's any better than free...*shrugs* hrmm...maybe you could 'earn' a paid membership by getting new members to sign up via distributing leaflets, add a field in the registration page called "referred by" and have a referral code at the bottom of the pamphlets we could potentially distribute. Anywho, just tossing ideas around here
