is that when i buy my fish from the fish shop they are introduced in to there new home and are extramly active darting from left to right, but after a couple of days they just sit there and maintain a stationary position acasiunaly moving. what i mean is that they 'slow down'. is something wrong. could this be lack of sleep because these guppies are new and being the school holidays i stay up to like five and my table lamp is on and i think they cant sleep.

How often do you do water changes? and how many fish do you put in at one time, into what size tank? do you know your water parameters? They may be lethargic if the water conditions are not quite right for them...maybe if you are putting in quite a few you may be getting a bit of an ammonia spike after a couple of days...maybe step up your water changes a little when you first buy some new fish...try doing a w/c about 2 days after new fish arrive to try and head off possible spikes and then go back to regular weekly water change once you feel they have settled in.... also your guppies wont always swim around crazily, they do have "rest" times where they are not as active....
I suppose you just have to use your instincts to tell you if they are just "resting" or actually not happy or sick... HtH

nope. i think they are unhappy. and i dont think they would rest 90 % off the time. i doubt they are sick. i will do more water changes and perhaps put up my kh and gh because i know they are pritty low... thanks

this behavior is quite common when PH/KH is very low. usually you will notice them getting lethargic, not eating very well, if it is very low they start getting white edges on the fins and sometimes shimmying and finrot. unfortunatley this is almost identicle to nitrite poisoning.

The harder the gh the better IMO.,... my kh sits at about 4-5 and my gh around 15 and over....my gups are very active... hope that helps yours...
