Plants Unsuitable for Use in Aquaria There also are other problem plants circulating everywhere. These plants are not true aquatic plants. Below is a list of plants often sold as aquarium plants that truely are meant to be potted and housed next to your window.

I'm sure I've missed a few plants as well. Basic rule of thumb:
If it looks like a houseplant, it probably is and has no place in your aquarium.

Again a case of Buyer Beware!
it is always a good idea to research plants before buying as rule of thumb, just because, like fish some will require a special environment.

What about Fontinalis (Excuse the spelling) I cant find out very much about it. Looks very similar to Java moss and about 1/4 of the cost.

I have Ludwigia growing in my tank and have never had a problem with it.

I am guessing with some of the plants on the list that dont have the full name that it refers to others of the species. some will grow in the water (the list also has echinodorous of which some will grow in water and fast flowing streams, some are simply bog plants that will only survive submerged for a few weeks). I would take it as a guide to know that some of the species listed are sold as aquatics but are actually bog plannts that will only survive a short time. I have seen some LPS trying to flog spider plants, peace lilly, prayer plant, mondo grass and other common house plants as aquatics. some of which are quite toxic.
