i have put some lead weights (fishing sinkers) in my tank to hold down some weed. is this going to kill my fish? can't remember what type of weed it is.
what is the metal that comes with the weed when you buy it?

It may slowly poison the fish over a long period of time. Best to just add enough sand/gravel/substrate to hold down the plants. usually 2cm at the front of the tank, increasing to between 4-5cm at the back if you have plants.
welcome to the forum BTW

Personally I hate gravel. Everytime Ive used it Ive had problems. Now in one tank I have Zeolite, 2 tanks I have a FINE gravel, it looks really nice and so easy to clean and in the other 2 tanks I have nothing. I use fake plants which come with a little cup on the bottom and I put a marble in the cup as a weight and bury it under the substarte.....Sounds awful but looks good. Speaking of plants.... I went to a LFS on the weekend and saw this HUGE reptile plant. I asked the guy if these could be used in fish tanks, he didnt know so I inspected the plant and they are identical to the aquarium one. I get this plant home, open the bag and clean in de clorinated water, I got a wonderful suprise, this plank spreads out. It almost covers the back of a 2 ft tank!!! and looks sensational.... Price $11.00. Check these out for fake plants they are so much more vlaue than buying the aquarium ones which are usually $11.00 or so for 3 or 4 sprigs that go striaght up and down. Im rambling...its early in the morning.

I use gravel in mine with an undergravel filter set up and have had no probs... I think it is a personal choice....Some people use glass rocks (those rounded type ones they use in vases) just as long as you vacuum regularly to keep the substrate clean I dont think it matters...
Sassy... pics of your reptile plant please!!! its got me very interested!!!!

ok thanks will remove now... what is better sand or grave like covering over the bottom of the tank ?? b depends if you want to go planted in the future. some people will use substrate like sand or specialist plant substrate, covered with gravel. for easy to care for plants you can just use gravel. sand is fairly hard to clean, the larger the gravel size, the easier it is to clean. Depends on the ammount of attention you like to give your tanks. Most people just go for a 5mm gravel.

about the sand or gravel question: i use gravel because its easyer to maintain + sand will stick together into big cluncks after a while. dont know why tho
