There are a number of small internal electric filters available to use in Australia and these seem very popular ATM. These are small boxes that sit inside the aquarium and force water through a sponge by means of an impeller (small fan inside). Depending on the model they may also provide aeration. Their popularity is usually due to their quietness compared to any air-pump driven filters. If buying one of these they can make a very strong current within the aquarium so make sure it is the right strength for the size tank you have, or has a means of controlling the pump speed. Models that provide both speed control and aeration are the best buys.
