A basic sponge filter is simply a sponge attached around the intake of a small powerhead pump. water is drawn into the sponge then forced out through the pump. there is also a model that is run with an air-pump similar to a standard corner filter. These are very gentle and good for fry and fancies. Filtration is biological from beneficial bacteria living within the sponge. again two is reccomended for gravel-free tanks.
