probably the cheapest filter available is the old style corner filter. this usually consists of a small box with two tubes and two compartments, the top being filled with fibre wool, the bottom being filled with charcole or marbles. a hose from a air pump is then attached and bubbles force water through the media creating the filtering action. These are very gentle and great to use in gravel-free tanks and fry tanks. Traditionally two are used so when one is cleaned the other can maintain the tanks cycling process.

could you get away with just one if you put bio balls in the bottom of the filter and changed all other media while leaving the bios in place.?
