I have put several new suction cups onto heaters, thermometers ect, and have also put a completely new heater into one tank. OK the problem is that the new rubber ( suction cups and the rubber heater parts) have developed a kind of fungus! Have never seen this before!!! Its weird, white , slimy, breaks up really easy when u touch it, looks like a fungus! Its awful, makes a mess of the tank. I have cleaned things once but some of the rubber parts i have had to clean twice.Hopeing it doesnt come back. Has anyone had this before? The fish seem unaffected as do plants, just on the rubber.

definitley, the first time you put anything in the tank with rubber and that white slimey coating grows. I am guessing because rubber is a natural sap-based product it might have something organic that a bacteria or fungus likes to grow on. Mystery snails seem to love the stuff and it disappears after a few weeks.

I think you just hit the nail on the head for me. The tank with the fungus has NO snails in it. I will put some in from my other tanks. Thanks heaps. This had me stumped.

the little brown pond snails that multiply like crazy? I love em...they seem to clean off fuzzy gunk but a little slower than the mysteries.

That was a great idea , since putting the snails in THEY HAVE CLEANED UP THE FUNGUS!!! The tank looks good now, i also think snails help with good bacteria from their gut as they browse and poop. Will put the extra snails in my pond.
