I have 2 male and 1 female platies My female is pregnant not sure how far but I noticed about a week ago. I have noticed that one of the males is very protective of her. hes not even trying to make an attempt at mating with her but never swims more than 10cm from her unless she is well hidden in my plants. hes chasing off all the other fish and flares his fins at any that dare go near. Is this normal behaviour? Does any one have any info on platies breeding and their fry apart from that in the platy thread?

I have noticed this behavior in platies, swords and especially mollies. In the wild these fish live in 'harems'. These are small groups of females that are protected by a single male who will attack other males and other small fish if they come near his females, they will not even let their females stray far from the group and will be quick to herd them back. Males will often fight to gain control of harems, losing males being chased away. Usually one of the reasons it is a good idea not to keep more than 1 of the larger livebearing male fish in tanks together. One will always be a punching bag if he strays into the other dominant males territory.
hope this explains a little of his behavior. Platies are the least agressive but still seem to like to have a 'favourite' female or two.
