One of my female guppies started looking strange the other day.... it was immediately after she had babys....following 2 days hid more than normal then came out and started hovering near top... looking a little "pine conish" and paler in colour... has long string of white consistently coming out of "babie hole" i am pretty sure its not pooh! Thought maybe she was aborting or something then decided no... as her side of her body had some redness to it in places which has now formed into an obvious tumour type lump....
Have separated her into hospital tank and currently treating with pima fix.... she is still eating well and swims around but seems to hover more than normal...
I thought she might have dropsy.... or a case of columnaris but the rest of the gups are fine..,. (my tank is overstocked with growing fry at moment) Nitrates sitting at about 40ppm (a bit high for my liking) am going to be doing more w/c until I can grow these guys out and sell them!
anybody else have any ideas... do you think I am going about this the right way or should I be more aggressive with treatment.. ie. maybe use some tetracycline or something on her....? opinions??? ......

That does sound very weird, I guess with both the red mark and dropsy like symptoms it could be bacterial dropsy.
BTW is she very skinny with scales sticking out? I have seen this on emaciated fish after they give birth, they sometimes recover with good water and lots of food. I only recently noticed this 'skinny pineconing' when our council added too much chlorine and a waterchange almost killed a tank of fish. most residents recovered in about 4 weeks but the nitrite poisoning made a lot very skinny, lethargic, gasping at surface and prone to bacterial infection.

No she is not skinny... she is one of my largest females and the one I have had for the longest (about 4months) I dont know how old she was when I bought her but she has grown alot so I think she was still fairly young when I got her.... She is thinner than she was before she gave birth but is by no means skinny... (a little bloated I think) Its weird because she is still eating and swimming around ... The lump is weird and is almost ulcerous but not... if that makes sense.... anyway she has been acting what I think is strange for about 2days and then the lump started appearing yesterday and it is quite large today... like the size of an emoticon.... (best way to describe it... ) Anyway whilst treating with the pimafix I dont know whether I should do a w/c as it may effect the meds...? what do you think?

not sure really. I havnt had much luck with treating dropsy of any kind. I think all you can do really is give them clean water, an anti-bacterial and hope for the best. Ulcer/lumps are very uncommon in gups. I have heard of some people having sucess with bacterial dropsy and maracyn 1 but its very hard to come by in aus.

Well I will just persist with what I am doing and hopefully the prognosis will be positive... if there doesnt seem much change in another day with the lump I am going to try tetracycline...fingers crossed.... shes a sentimental favourite... blackish body with purplish tail and fins.... I have one of her daughters who as turned out to be nearly identical....

Here are some photos of my sick guppy... you can see the pinecone effect and also the "tumour".... am now medicating with tetracycline to see if that helps... she is still eating and swimming so thats positive but I dont think the prognosis is too good... 1. Pine cone effect taken from above 2. Tumour - shots - best I could get... Thought you might be interested....

thanks for the pictures, strangley enough I lost a female to exactly the same thing today. she was heavily pregnant and due in about 2-3 days. she was ok at 4am this morning and then when I got home at 2pm she was dead with a similar growth on her side, scales sticking out and her whole abdomen was black. the 'tumor' seemed to be a hole where the bacterial infection had broken out through the skin from the inside. I am sure it is the same thing that killed the bettas overnight. I have never seen a dropsy that kills this quick again the only thing that has happened with that tank is the rise in heat from the current hot weather.

Unfortunately I think the heat was the procursor to the problem... I suppose depending on their age the heat affects them in different ways.... Sorry to hear about your losses... its always sad to lose your fish to incurable diseases...
