A lot of people out there think that a molly is a freshwater fish, and also that they are a hard to keep fish as they do not usually last long in the community aquarium. Why? you ask. The molly is a Brackish water fish which means it comes from estuaries and rivers. Its habitat ranges from the mouth of rivers to almost full fresh water so it can tolerate a huge range of salt conditions. so how much salt do you need to keep your mollie happy? approx 1 tsp per 5 gal is the minimum you need to keep your molly happy, this is a safe amount to use in almost any community aquarium and wont usually effect plants or other fish. The IDEAL amount is 1/2 a cup per 5 gal. but this is only suitable for other brackish fish such as scats, bumblebee gobies. some plants that can tolerate these conditions are the java fern and the obsequeous Java moss. These also provide great cover for fry and a great place for algae to grow for the adults.
