How many guppies have you put in?
can you describe the smell? is it fishy, or stagnant/sour, etc.
... what have you got in the tank... ie.what filtration? what substrate? any driftwood? Rocks? plants? what are your water parameters...ie.ph,gh,ammonia,nitrites.
Did you use any of the water from your other tank or any of the substrate from the other tank as that can help your new tank to cycle faster by putting some good bacteria from the set up tank...
It is strange that it should have a pungent smell just over night.... have you got any signs of algae bloom or anything like that... are your guppies ok.?

there are 2 guppies and my cory. Ive got an under gravel filter. the smell is really strange I cant place it and you cant really describe it the guy im seeing is a breeder and even he couldnt figure it out. I have 1 sml rock and some plants in there and yeah some were from my other tanks and all my water levels ie ph ammonia and all that are fine. its all fresh water none from my other tanks and cant see any algae looks clear. One guppy that was in there was dying when I looked this morning but nothing was obviously wrong she was just swimming/floating upside down so I froze her. But the other fish are fine.

try doing water change and put in some of your water from other tank to try and help cycle along... lets say do 40% w/c... 20%fresh and 20%water from other tank that should get a few bio-organisms happening!
Dont add anymore fish.... just leave it at what you have in there for time being... say about 2 weeks just to give tank a chance to cycle properly... look out for an ammonia spike may happen about 7 days in.. then the levels should even out... so try and be patient.. once all has been fine for 2weeks with the fish you have in there then you can start putting more in but do it slowly , a few at a time over a few weeks.... don't overload the tank too quickly...
In regard to the smell....are you sure that it is coming from within the tank.. its so new that its hard to think of what might be smelling so quickly... is it a wooden stand with varnish that maybe smells or something like that? Its a pity you cant send smells over the net!! ;D
well I hope those suggestions help... remember to keep your temp down to about 24-25c as that will help prevent columnaris. HTH. sammi

carbon can remove smells, so can the 'geoliquid for guppies'
a 'pond' type smell is normal but anything strong or unpleasant should be looked into.
I would try the carbon as it will also remove ammonia and nitrite from your new tank.
waterchange of 25% every few days may also help.

you can buy it at lfs and pop some in the foot of a stocking and tie it up then hang it in the corner of your tank.. just a handful should be enough... I have been searching the net and most sites say that a smelly tank is due to a build up of bacteria, overfeeding/waste which causes ammonia... as it is cycling it could be an ammonia issue so carbon should help as bumblebee said. if you have the space in your filter, the stocking-wrapped carbon can be put in there as long as it doesnt clog the waterflow or interrupt any moving parts.
