I was wondering if someone could help with a juvenile discus. he is eating well, in water at 6.5 ph, soft in a heavily planted tank he is very active.
problem is he is always showing his dark bands . is this usual for a juvenile or is he somehow stressed?

Bumblebee, that is quite normal for juveniles to show their bars... as long as he is eating well and growing then I would not worry.... what strain is he.. ie. blue turq, red turq, snakeskin, I would love to see a photo... They take a while to colour up and depending on the fish sometimes they will always show bars....it can be a stress indicator but you will normally be able to tell the difference between stress and normal showing of the bars. Oh and also.... discus do tend to do better in groups of 4 or more....as they are a schooling fish.... will be less likely to get stressed....

thanks very much, it definitly had been eating well and growing. it is a deep blue with red lines, The others were a greenish blue and much lighter the label just said 'green torquoise discus' some were green some blue. here is a photo the day after I got it but its colour is very washed out by the flash.

Hi Bumblebee, he is very cute and probably a Brilliant blue turquoise.... they can look green at times as well as blue.... I have one whose colouring is similar when I take shots with flash... he looks more blue without flash.... it depends on the lighting.... Green turqs and Blue turqs are pretty much the same thing... just like blue diamonds and ocean greens... people argue alot about whether an ocean green actually exists or whether it is just a blue diamond that looks a little greener....
who cares!! they are all gorgeous no matter what they are called.

Love the little guy so far. He has started eating cichlid pellets and stealing my ABN's wafers. I am surprised he/she hasnt botherd the baby guppys in the tank. thought they would get eaten! It hassles me non stop for bloodworms.
