had a Yard glass sitting around for aver six years gathering dust. going to try to turn it into an ornament tank for 1 or 2 guppies.
just tested only hold 2 litres of water. biggest problems so far are, is there enough room? and heating?

Wouldnt trust it, for an unheated, unairted tank you would need 1lt per cm of fish (without tail) possibly could fit 1 neon, white cloud or endler. How about something weird like a air-breathing dragon-fly larvae. it would make a good conversation piece!
it maye even be good to put plants/ whatever you were going to decorate it with as a tank then put it into one of your large tanks as a feature. This way the fish can explore it then leave without being harmed.

looking into the aired part, going to check a glass mob out soon and see if i coul;d get a hole drilled near the bottom to fit a air hose through and then fit a air stone in the bottom. was thinking of a plant right up through the centre but it would take up too much room

reptile heaters, heating band may be an option. aqua-one and blutherm make some very tiny 25watt heaters that I use in 2lt jars to raise killi and betta fry. these might be an option also. I have seen some large alcohol bottles transformed into tanks with holes drilled into the bottom for a airator. they also had plants like java moss and LED's biult into the base they had made to cover the pipes and cords.

Just a little point... an airstone wont "create" extra oxygen it will only help to circulate the oxygen that is there... The smaller you surface area the harder it is to keep the fish alive and happy and healthy....If the glass has a neck that goes thinner you would want to only fill to the widest part of the glass as that would give you the most surface area to allow the best oxygen saturation...(thats the best way I can describe it) I personally would nt recommend it... it may sound like a cool idea but the fish wont have much room to swim around in and guppys really like to do that as we all know.. maybe put fake glass fish in it as a talking feature. rather than live ones... JMO ;D

Being a creator of leadligjht windows........I would recommend IF you were to go ahead with this project to take your yard glass to a leadlight window manufacterer and ask them to place the hole at the botoom for an airtube. Now this can be done, they use a glass grinder. I have done this several times with litre alcohol bottles for the lighting cords for lamps. Be aware that the glass in yard glass is probbaly quite thin in places and they wont guarantee a safe procedure, it could shatter. Also keep in mind once you get the airtube fitted it should be sealed with a non toxic silicone and therefore cannot be removed for cleaning. It sounds a great idea in theory but when you look at all that could go wrong Id rather stick to a proper tank for live fish. Hope this helps

yeah after much thinking about it the idea maybe scraped as too many things got piled into the "too hard basket". not really worried about it smashing as it's only been gathering dust for 6 years.

still wouldnt stop you using it as an ornament in a big tank though. I have seen old fashioned coke bottles and other glassware used in aquariums to great effect. best when you have a ghost-knife-fish. put in a glass tube and they will 'hide' inside.

just just got a 4 foot tank from my parents, fixing one side as the front door swung open and hit it (whilst at parents house, empty)
this will be come the main tank my smaller 3 foot tank will be for the fry (put mother in breeding tank and fry will fall out bottom into main part of the tank) the current fry tank will be come my hospital/quarrentine tank. also found another tank at work (small 1 footer) the goldies get this one..... ha ha no more heating for the goldies, until i can afford a heater for them that is.
