Female guppies can store sperm for around 6, even 8 batches of fry so once she has been in contact with a male there is no telling who the father is if she is later required for breeding a specific strain, or if a very strict breeding programme is being used. It is vital then to separate required females before breeding age, which in some strains can be as little as 4 weeks. The good news is that females can be sexed at a very young age by simply looking for a mini gravid spot, females will also be able to be sexed long before males develop their gonipodium at around 4-8 weeks of age. Separating females will ensure you can get the best from your breeding stock and have a greater choice of picking quality stock.
