Unless you have a good idea of the conception date of the fry then this can be very difficult to judge. The only sure way is to watch for when the males in the tank start to madly chase the female (usually hours before birth) so they will be first to father the next batch of fry. A female may also hide in corners, in plants and around heaters and filters swimming on the spot, darting around and nipping at males that come near.

On guppys having large broods they will take on a 'square' or boxy appearance in the abdomen area although they may still not give birth for a few days

Was wondering what "boxy" meant. I was calling it a double chin..lol. They do look squarish when about to drop.

Its pretty hard to describe if you have never seen it happen but they literally go from having a rounded belly to having a very 'square' belly, like they have eaten a small box or something. I notice sometimes that the females vent will also stick out like a small triangle or point.

Patience is not a virtue of mine, guess thats why you keep more than one guppy, so there is always something going on in the tank and someone preparing to have babies or babies getting bigger with more colour. My girls are STILL waiting and getting bigger. They still look square with a flat bottom to their tummy. Its not the waiting, its hoping u catch the bubs before they get eaten.

The odd thing in my tank is that all females (give or take one or two) always ahve their babies between the 1st and 10th of the month regular as clockwork. No idea why but it makes things easier to arrange
