It is very simple, cut a reasonably new mature leaf off at about 3 inches below water level, leave the stem on the plant and on the leaf. about 4-7 days later the leaf wil begin to grow roots from the cut end of the stem, and if you are lucky the stem left on the plant will begin to form plantlets too. These will naturally grow into banana's and fall off when they are mature enough. I tried this and it works

Had no idea how to propogte banana lillies, thanks. This is what happened a few days ago while doing maintenance on one of my tanks. I knocked the growing top off one of my banana lillies, there is a bit with heaps of roots still green, and a top with leaves and a few roots. Lets wait and see what bit takes better and if indeed one might die or both. I like gardening too so am thinking that maybe both peices might live. What do you think?

i found out by knocking off a newly unfurled leaf. it floated around the tank and then sprouted roots. they are fairly hardy so it is unlikley you will loose them. the only time I killed a plant was by digging up a well established plant and then re-planting during a water change. are yours planted or free floating? they seem easier to kill once they have formed real roots rather than 'bananas'.

There on the bottom but havnt sent roots into the gravel yet. Maybe if i lift it up say every few days, they wont get a foothold in the gravel and can then be kept "mobile", so they keep their bananas as roots. The bottom bit that just had roots left with a small stump of stem i think is developing a small bump that may be a new growth tip, its also sent a couple of new roots down.

I have 3 'well established' plants. they are beautiful but once established you need to keep removing the outer leaves. they quickly take up all the space at the top of the aquarium so care should be taken to remove leaves and allow other plants some light. some of the leaves on my well established ones are about the size of a tea plate. they get huge!

Cool...am trying the leaf way to propogate at the mo no roots but i only just started it. Think i like the sound of an established plant so im gonna let one go, send roots down, see how it goes.
