(i dont want to kill them but my fish are relativly healthy so i dont want to spread infection either.

Do you have a photo... its a bit hard to say what it might be without seeing it...
Any other damage to the fin..... is the fish showing signs of illness... ie.. listless, or breathing heavy, shimmying etc....
Does the lump look like it has any reddening around it... Has it got bigger....
I suppose in the absense of knowing any of these things all I can suggest is that you maintain regular water changes to ensure that your water quality is optimum and maybe add a teaspoon of cooking salt (not table salt) per 40 litres of water.... Just make sure that if you have any catfish or loaches that you totally dissolve the salt before adding to the tank.... Some people, myself included wont put any salt in a tank which has any catties or loaches in it as they dont have scales....and can be sensitive to salt and meds...... but I have read that you can if you dissolve it thoroughly... (I havent tried it though...) hth

Problem with dye injected fish (and one of the resons they should never be sold) is that the ink injected into them is just normal, quite toxic printing ink. over about 6 weeks, as it is directly injected into the fishes body cavity, the fishes immune system trys to clean out this forign substance. there is so much of it injected that this litterally destroys the fishes immune system. Single needles are ulso used on 1000's of different fish so almost all of them carry disease like lymphocystitis virus (white lumps) columnaris, neon tetra disease and fish tb, three of which are incurable. This also turns the poor dyed fish into a nice little biological timebomb to add to your tank as these diseases are released when it starts becoming ill as its immune system weakens or the fish dies.
unfortunatly the little white lumps appearing on fins are classic symptoms of the lympho virus in these tetra. It cna infect other fish and cause huge ugly growths like those you see on goldfish.
I feel sorry for anyone who is stung by buying these fish as they are often the end of a nice healthy tank. An LPS near me got mistakenly shipped a load of these fish and in stead of sending them back she put them in the tanks to sell. Her tanks were on a closed system and within weeks of adding the dyed fish (that were all dead within 3 weeks) her livebearer tanks were hit with fish TB, other fish developed Lympho. in the end it resulted in all stock having to be destroyed and the tanks being sterilised and started again. She has never had these problems before or after and has always had fish in great shape.... Having seen similar things happen to many peoples tanks firsthand after adding these fish I like to warn them that they are a disaster waiting to happen.
In the end they are a nice brightly-coloured package of disease in a conveniently immune -supressed incubator.
