Columnaris Bumblebee, I purchased the antibiotic you suggested. Aquari- cycline from Aqua master. The directions are so vague. Ive looked on the net abd many people are as confused as I am. I went to their site and it said treat for 3 days. HOW do you use this antibiotic? Is it One tablet for the duration of 3 days OR One tablet each day for 3 days? It also says replace aquarium water after sucessful treatment. Is that a 100% change? ? I also have another question... If only 1 fish has the sign of the disease is it advisable to treat the whole tank because this is very contagious or just hospitalize the 1 fish and treat? Sorry to be a pain in the rear. I apprecate your advice. UGH>> my fish have more meds in their fish keeping box than I have in my entire house....and I hate meds!! __________________

When I use tetracyclene Antibiotic I will isolate the fish (usually in a small 1.5lt icecream container) and just float it in the tank, and just use the small container to treat the sick fish. The best method I have found is to treat (throw out old water, add new water from the tank and re-medicate) every day untill the fish is better. This can take from 3-6 days depending on the kind of infection.

The antibiotic Ive got is in tablet form. How much do you use for a small container like that. My sick tank at the moment is a 20 Litre glass friut bowl LOl Makes an awesome fish tank! But reading I have to change the water daily I may opt for the smaller one and hang in the tank. Thanks for your help YET AGAIN!

guesswork really. If the tablet treats 20lt and you have a 1lt container then you would need to break off 1/20 of the tablet to use. Using smaller containers is definitly a more economic way of treating fish with expensive meds like antibiotic.

I hate to confuse issues but I have used tetracycline before with my discus and it was not necessary to do w/c everyday.... I was advised to leave meds in for 3 days then when I did w/c to add in meds equivilent to the change.
ie. if tank is 20 litres put in one tablet (dissolve in a small amount of tank water first) Leave in tank for 3 days (the day you put tablet in counts as one) On the 3rd day if you do 50% water change then add Half a tablet (as the antibiotic stays in the water so you only need to top up) or if you do 25% change a quarter tablet. I was also advised to keep treatment up for at least 7 days so I did a nine day treatment and that worked...
This was using the aqua - cycline tablets... HTH.
depending on the size of your tank I would be inclined to treat whole tank due to contagious aspect of columnaris. if the tank is too large then separation is the more realistic option. HTH

No problem. they will also work that way just depending on the severity of the infection. I have just had more luck on very severe cases using the change very day method (on a case of a poor fish with a severe case of pop-eye in both eyes and half its tail gone)
Agreed on the longer than suggested treatment time. most of the fish I have treated didnt start looking better for at least 6 days, usually I leave it a few days longer to make sure the infection is gone.
